park avenue apartment
A full-floor Park Avenue apartment was transformed into a Parisian-inspired home where classical architectural character provides a carefully composed setting for an exceptional contemporary art collection.
Completely gutted and rebuilt for a couple with five children, the apartment was extensively reconfigured to create a sequence of gracious, interconnected rooms more characteristic of a grand European apartment. New openings, moldings, parquet floors, paneled rooms, and carefully considered sightlines give the interiors a sense of permanence, as though they had always belonged to the building.
Art was integral to the architecture from the outset. The owner, an art financial advisor with a background in fine and decorative arts, has assembled a collection that includes works by Maurice Mboa, Deborah Kass, Cecily Brown, Leon Polk Smith, George Condo, and Cindy Sherman. Rather than treating the collection as an overlay, the architecture creates moments of compression, symmetry, color, and long perspective that allow individual works to hold their own while remaining part of the larger composition.
The result balances the formality and elegance the clients associated with a Paris apartment with the practical demands of contemporary family life: a home designed equally for children, art, and the rituals of everyday living.
